HSEP

Youth America, Inc. collaborates with the NYC Department of Education’s Pathways to Graduation Program and Medgar Evers College to operate the High School Equivalency Prep Program (HSEP), an alternative high school education initiative. The mission of the HSEP is to provide students with a non traditional route to achieve a high school diploma alongside unique life-enrichment opportunities. In preparation for the Test Assessing Secondary Completion exam to earn their High School Equivalency diploma, students attend prep classes Monday through Friday 9am-3pm on the Medgar Evers College campus. They also receive complementary services designed to help them develop healthy, self-sufficient lifestyles, college readiness skills, and career awareness. These services include full access to conferences and college prep workshops provided by Medgar Evers College, as well as paid internships through Youth America’s Brooklyn Vogue clothing boutique.

The HSEP program has an outstanding success rate - 75% of students who complete the program, pass the high equivalency exam.

The program annually serves 100- 150 students, ages 17-21. While the student population has traditionally been predominantly African American, the program reflects the growing diversity of surrounding Brooklyn communities, with students hailing from various countries, including Trinidad, Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Peru, Brazil, Haiti, Senegal, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Israel to name a few.

The HSEP program has an outstanding success rate:

  75% of students who complete the program, pass the high equivalency exam;

  80% of student who pass the exam, enroll in college;

  50% of those who go on to enroll in college, attend Medgar Evers College.
