Bridge to Business

Established in 2004, Bridge to Business (B2) is an entrepreneurship, job-readiness program that provides high school and college students with cutting-edge business training through paid internships at Youth America’s Brooklyn Vogue (BV) boutique. Launched the same year as the B2 program, BV is a social purpose business that sells fashionable women’s apparel at affordable prices (http://www.facebook.com/brooklynvogue/). Located in Fort Greene in the heart of the Fulton Area Business Improvement District just blocks from the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Barclay’s Athletic Center, it is a veritable “fashion business lab” where diverse young entrepreneurs develop sales, merchandising, customer service, and marketing expertise as well as practical experience managing a small business. Advanced interns also have the opportunity to shadow the Store Buyer at industry trade shows and designer showroom visits, as well as design apparel to be sold at BV.

Bridge to Business addresses the growing need for hands-on, real world learning experiences that both enhance and bridge the academic instruction students receive in the classroom. The program annually provides internship opportunities to 30-40 youth, ages 17-21. Interns receive stipends for their work, and some earn academic credits from their high schools and colleges.

Bridge to Business /Brooklyn Vogue is a model initiative that has received media coverage from CBS-TV News, ABC-TV News, NY Daily News, New York and Time Out magazines and TV Tokyo, Japan. As part of our efforts to ensure the longterm sustainability of the program and expand opportunities for youth to develop marketable skills, current plans for Brooklyn Vogue’s operation include remodeling the facility and launching an online store.
